The Crisis Center for Life Threatening Illness

Appointment Procedures

Friends In Deed offers a limited number of free one-on-one appointments each week.  These appointments, which include crisis counseling, bodywork, and nutritional counseling, are given to those whose needs are most critical.

How do I request an appointment?

Appointments may ONLY be requested after attending a Big Group.  When the group ends, go to the front desk and fully complete an Appointment Request Form.

Am I guaranteed to get an appointment if I submit a form?

No.  Filling out Appointment Request Form does NOT guarantee an appointment.  Appointments are scheduled based on our assessment of need and a fair distribution of limited resources.

How do I know if an appointment is available for me?

If an appointment is available, you will receive a call with the specific time and date. In most instances, you will receive a call the week before the appointment.  Given the high demand for one-on-one services and the limited number of available appointments, confirmation MUST be made on the day you receive the call.

When should I arrive at Friends In Deed if I receive a scheduled appointment?

It is essential that you show up for any appointment that you confirm, and that you arrive at least 5 minutes before the start time.

What if I need to cancel an appointment that I have confirmed?

We strongly encourage you to only accept appointments that you believe you can make. However, we understand that circumstances sometimes arise that are unavoidable.  If you have an urgent need to cancel an appointment, we ask that you provide us with at least 24-hour notice so that we can reschedule the appointment.  (If you need to cancel a Monday appointment, please notify us by Thursday at 4pm.) Call 212-925-2009.

What if I don’t receive a call with an appointment?

If you don’t receive a call within a week of submitting the Appointment Request Form, you may complete another request form after attending another Big Group in order to be eligible for an appointment.

Our Core Principles

At Friends In Deed we believe…
•that life is lived in the present moment.
•that the quality of life is not determined by our circumstances.

We believe in possibility…
•in a human being’s resiliency when faced with a life-threatening illness, caregiving, grief and loss.
•that God — as you understand the concept — is alive and well and working in your life.
•that you are the expert in your life.

We define compassion…
•as being with another person in suffering, without the need to fix or change a thing.

For us, spirituality is…
•the potential for the transformation of our perceptions.
•the ability to see things from multiple perspectives.

Our pragmatic spiritual and emotional support…
•normalizes “tragedy”.
•helps you find a way to contain the seemingly uncontainable.
•provides the guidance to make all of this possible in the context of our Big Group meetings and one-on-one counseling.

Yoga & Meditation Classes

MOVING MEDITATION: Have you ever been tempted to try meditation but thought you’d never be able to sit still for an extended period? Are you searching for a way to enhance your current meditation practice? Are you feeling isolated due to critical illness, caregiving or grief?

Moving Meditation with Samuel Kirshner may be just what you’re looking forCreated as an alternative to traditional sitting meditation practice, Moving Meditation employs a technique called Dynamic Mindfulness Meditation* developed by Samuel Kirschner.  Every Tuesday, using movement, music and the breath, this meditation practice can help you calm your mind when you are feeling isolated or overwhelmed from living with the anxiety of the unknown.  By anchoring your attention to your breath, you will begin to notice your thoughts, feelings and body sensations, allowing you to accept this moment and let go of judgment.  You will be able to discover the simple joy and clarity of the present moment – regardless of your circumstances and conditions.

*Dynamic Mindfulness Meditation is a coping skill and spiritual practice that can be used any time, anywhere: sitting, lying down, washing the dishes, walking around town, listening to music, dancing, waiting for a bus or in the doctor’s office, or before making an important decision.

YOGA: Every Wednesday, Ken Katz teaches a basic meditative yoga class. This is a basic, relaxing, meditative class which will include: chanting, warm-ups, a full range of physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises, a deep relaxation (yoga nidra), and meditation, leading to a state of calm and peace.  Individual instruction and adjustments will be provided as necessary. Although yoga’s physical benefits are profound, it is fundamentally a moving meditation that can be done by anyone. Yoga helps lead us to self-acceptance and is never competitive.
